PTSD Dogs Australia is a Public Benevolent Institution with a focus on Advancing social or public welfare, based on the Sunshine Coast, supporting Veterans and First Responders across Australia who are living with post traumatic stress.

We train and place carefully selected assistance dogs to help restore confidence, independence, and stability in everyday life.

Our focus is not quick fixes or short term solutions.

It is long term outcomes that genuinely improve quality of life.

Why We Exist

Post traumatic stress can isolate people from their families, their communities, and their sense of safety.

For Veterans and First Responders, this often comes after years of service spent supporting others.

We exist to provide a practical, proven form of support that works quietly alongside traditional care… offering consistency, reassurance, and companionship where it is needed most.

An assistance dog does not replace treatment or support networks.
It strengthens them.

What We Do

PTSD Dogs Australia rescues suitable dogs from shelters and works through a careful process of assessment, training, and placement.

Every year in Australia, more than 200,000 dogs are surrendered to shelters or classified as stray, with thousands euthanised annually.

By rescuing suitable dogs and training them as assistance dogs, PTSD Dogs Australia creates a second chance for both the dog and the person they will support.

Each dog is trained to:

  • Support daily routines and independence

  • Provide grounding and reassurance

  • Assist with anxiety, hypervigilance, and emotional regulation

  • Build confidence in public and private settings

Equally important, we prepare and support handlers before, during, and long after placement to ensure outcomes last.

This is not a transaction.
It is a partnership.

Our Purpose

As a benevolent non-profit organization, our focus lies in the rescue and training of displaced and abandoned dogs.

Our mission is to provide aid and companionship to Australia’s brave First Responders – including fire, police, and ambulance services – as well as personnel from the Australian Defence Force. These individuals often grapple with the invisible wounds of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and our aim is to alleviate their pain and foster healing through the companionship of our specially trained dogs.

"We’re a team of professional advocates, volunteers and supporters with a passion for people and animals. We’re dedicated to the rescuing, rehoming and training of displaced and unwanted dogs."
